IT Series: Archived Lectures

This is the first in a series of posts about the IT department at our school, and how you can get the most out of your school email, the server, sciarc.edu and other technical offerings.

Did you know that all of the recent lectures and exhibitions at SCI-Arc as well as some older ones, are archived on the school's website?  A quick look shows that we have all of them from 2002 forward, while there are fewer of the older ones available.  DVD's or Videos of these lectures are also available in the Library (where you can even borrow a TV and VCR to watch them on.)

For the lectures, this includes the main series, Faculty Talks and Symposiums.  Gallery, Library, Student and Thesis exhibitions are recorded.  So if you want to get some ideas for your thesis project, or cull through all of the late Raymund Abraham's SCI-Arc lectures, the school website is the place for you.

Student Survey - Win a pair of Headfones

SCI-Arc students,

The academic council, your elected representatives, are conducting a survey of the student body.  We are looking for answers to any and all issues you may have with SCI-Arc as an institution and a place of work.  We want to hear what is working so we can make sure it stays in place and we want to hear how things might work better, if and only if...

We want to hear from all of you.  We're offering a prize, a brand new set of headfones, to encourage you to improve your work environment.  If you fill out the survey, you will be entered to win. We will have a drawing and announce the winner next week at Friday @ 5 (3/26/10).  Regardless of whether you win the headphones or not, we will be taking your ideas to the heads of the departments.  Your class representatives will be distributing surveys and there will be a drop box by the cafe.  Pick up your survey from your student body reps, at the drop box, or see your email for an attached PDF.  Return them to the drop box (by the cafe like it says four lines up dummy.)

We all have ideas about how SCI-Arc could be better, make your voice heard.

Lady Gaga and Thom Mayne

I have to pass on an excellent piece, where Japhy Grant compares the most popular pop star in years to the "rock star" of contemporary architecture.  If you haven't seen Gaga's newest video, you can watch it here, and then follow along as Grant dissects it's relevance to Los Angeles culture.
Both Gaga and Mayne get Los Angeles and Southern California on a fundamental level. Rather than try to resolve the disparate, complex and conflicting forces in modern society, why not highlight them? Celebrate them?
Thanks for Geoff April for the tip.

if you need green beer

If you're trying to cut our of Studio early in order to drink some green beer today, here's a map to guide you to the best Irish, Brittish and Scottish bars in L.A. For us downtowners, you might note that the green tag for Casey's Irish Pub is hiding behind the blue one for Seven Grand:

Solar Decathalon

The Project Managers for Wes Jones' Solar Decathalon Vertical Studio has submitted their proposal today. Hopefully they will soon get a chance to fill the rest of us in on their proposal, and update us on the schedule for the process going forward.
